Ingredients:
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
- 1 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
- 3 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, baking powder, and baking soda.
- In a large bowl, cream together the butter and granulated and brown sugars until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add the flour mixture and vanilla extract to the butter mixture in three additions, beginning and ending with the flour mixture.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Cool cakes in the pans for 10 minutes before turning out onto wire racks to cool completely.
Tips:
- For a richer cake, add 1/2 cup of semisweet chocolate chips to the batter.
- To make a vanilla cake, omit the vanilla extract.
- Serve cakes with a variety of toppings, such as fresh fruit, whipped cream, or chocolate shavings.
